The book presents materials of the Iamal land use expedition, carried out comprehensive natural-geographic, demographic, household economic survey of the Iamal Region of the Iamal (Nenets) District in 1934-1937 for rationalizing and regulating land use and reconstructive activities among indigenous people. A various information about climate, hydrography, vegetation, nature, condition of pastures, hunting grounds and traditional sectors of the economy (reindeer herding, hunting, fishing), indigenous population of the North collected, processed and analyzed by the expedition members are unique in their completeness of data. They characterize a difficult period in history and economy of the Iamal-Nenets Autonomous District and its indigenous population. Many of the results of land use works and their ideas on which they were based, have been implemented in subsequent years.
The book is intended for ethnographers, historians, sociologists, economists, geographers, and everyone who are interested in the transformation of the traditional economy of indigenous peoples in the period of socialist transformation.
